Washington DC – 2/6/19

The Museum of the Palestinian People (MPP) is excited to announce that renovations began this week in preparation for our Grand Opening this Spring. Thanks to a generous donor, MPP will have a permanent home in Dupont Circle in Washington, DC in order to fulfill our mission of sharing the rich history, vibrant arts and culture of the Palestinian people with local and global audiences. In January, the District of Columbia Government granted approval for the space to be renovated and open its doors to the public. As demolition and construction began on our space, we reflected on the significance of the literal walls being knocked down that represent the symbolic walls that will be brought down upon the opening of this museum. The unprecedented endeavor of creating this museum in DC is becoming a key force for creating representation for Palestinians and changing the narrative in the heart of the nation.

From day one, MPP has grown thanks to community support. We are honored to partner with ‘Michael and Sons Services’, a Palestinian-American owned contracting company and the largest in Washington DC, who is generously donating their services in solidarity with MPP and our mission.

We are also thrilled to announce the appointment of  Nada Odeh as a head curator to design the permanent exhibition and temporary displays for 2019. Odeh holds a Bachelor in Fine Arts from the Damascus University and an MA in Museum Studies from Syracuse University. Nada shared, “As curator and artist who has exhibited all over the world, I am so honored to be part of this historical project that will create a new story about the Palestinian people”.

The Museum of the Palestinian People is a non-profit organization and is deeply appreciative of our partners, volunteers and founding donors who have made this historical milestone possible. To make a financial contribution or join our team of volunteers, please visit our website.

MPP is excited to share with you our latest progress update!

So far in our fundraising campaign, we have

  • Secured a 70% discount from the architect to work on floor plans and necessary permits from the DC government
  • Secured a pro bono contractor committed to completing the renovations and upgrades at cost.
  • We’ve managed to double the size of our team to include professional curators, designers, video makers and artists.
  • We have past $50,000 in the first three weeks of the campaign.
  • We have also been approached by local organizations such as the Ramallah Federation, Anera, the Tabbard Inn and the Mosaic Theater to partner with us.

We also recently launched MPP community dinners which bring the Palestinian community together to express what it means to live in the U.S., to envision the Museum of the Palestinian People (MPP), and discuss how the Palestinian story will be told.

Guests have been inspired to open their hearts to share stories, opinions and concerns. They have experienced generosity and partnered with us financially to renovate and launch the Museum of the Palestinian People in Washington, D.C.!

The Museum of the Palestinian People’s new travelling exhibition Bethlehem Beyond the Wall offers visitors a rare glimpse of Bethlehem from the perspective of the city’s residents. The exhibition will be on view at Manhattan College in Kelly 5A from Feb 19 – 27, 10 am – 7 pm Monday through Saturday.

Everyone recognizes Bethlehem as the birthplace of Jesus, few know that the city has a rich modern culture. Throughout history, Bethlehem has been a site of tragedy, struggle and survival. Today the area including Bethlehem and its surrounding villages is home to 100,000 people, the site of three refugee camps, and four generations of refugees. Bethlehem Beyond the Wall seeks to show the city through the eyes of people who’ve lived there for centuries. The exhibition includes roughly 100 photographs organized into discrete sections, 7 paintings, 4 video interviews, and a series of maps to help viewers locate Bethlehem inside shifting political boundaries.
